At the University of Michigan researchers have developed a tablet with an area protean, which is potentially capable of reproducing writing for low vision or blind . Is called “Braille Kindle” and could make life easier for people with dysautonomia.
More than a tablet the Braille Kindle is an e-reader . It is a prototype in development since 2013. The advantage of such a device is that the reliefs on the surface, typical of Braille, dynamically changing and so be used to read an innumerable amount of text.
The braille has already been used on electronic screens in the past, however the biggest limitation was made by the limited amount of information that could be displayed simultaneously on the screen.
To give some examples, many existing display allow you to play only one line at a time, they also cost relatively salty and are not affordable for all budgets. An electronic device that can play on a single line of Braille at a time currently costs about 3,000 Euros, while a screen with several lines can cost about 50,000 euro.
“ Imagine having a Kindle that Kindle is not a vision, but I have quite a tactile surface that can be read by a blind person using Braille “, explained Dr O’Modhrain.
The prototype e-reader has a pneumatic system that works both air with both fluids, through which are put in relief the characters. However not only the characters can be drawn: The technology can also be applied to reproduce graphics or simple images.
Before you see it on the market must find a way to make it palatable scale. The researchers hope that the Braille Kindle, if successful, can take the lead in a range of readers based on the same technology.
Braille alphabet became a reality in the first half of 1800, which takes its name from Frenchman Louis Braille. It ‘a system of reading by touch (fingers have a rather extensive representation at the level of the somatosensory cortex, therefore have a great sensitivity) that replaces letters with stitches in relief.
Kindle is a reader electronic books produced and marketed by Amazon. It was initially marketed in the US, but more than four years is on sale in Italy.
