Paperwhite Amazon Kindle 2 (2013): unboxing, review, and various comparisons - Italian Notebook

Into Punctual and accurate as always, goodereader colleagues have published a series of in-depth videocomparative that pose compared the new Amazon Kindle Paperwhite 2 with Paperwhite of the first generation, Kobo Aura and Sony PRS-T3 . Before we delve into comparisons remember that in Paperwhite, 2013, Amazon introduced a new processor (25% faster than the previous year) and a new display third-generation E-Ink Paper, which replaces the previous Pearl, ensuring a substantial increase in contrast, rising by 50%, with deeper blacks and brighter whites and an equally significant improvement, equal 20% reflectance (do not use the E-Ink backlight), for a better readability. Finally, even the perimeter lighting system of the screen surface has been revised and is now more homogenous and powerful, always perfect readability even in the dark, while the touch panel is formed now by a grid of 19% more dense, which makes the Kindle Paperwhite more responsive to the touch, to respond with greater precision and to avoid accidental page turns.

Paperwhite Amazon Kindle 2 vs Paperwhite

Into As you can see by combining the two devices of first and second generation, Amazon did not want to risk the drastic and revolutions Paperwhite 2 is therefore just one evolutionary step compared to the previous year, even if the improvements relate to some key aspects of an eReader. Outwardly, such as design and size, the two Paperwhite that have not changed imperceptibly. Similarly Amazon has hardly touched the software: the home page is unchanged, therefore, as well as the reading experience and offers many powerful features.

Regarding the hardware platform instead only the processor has changed and is now a little ‘more powerful, having a clock rate of 1 GHz instead of 800 MHz instead of 256 GB RAM remains, while the space of internal storage still amounts to 2 GB, not expandable via microSD. The aspect that was accordingly revised most is the display. If size (6 inches) and resolution (1024 x 600 pixels) are in fact the same as the previous model, so it is not for the panel, which is now an E-Ink Paper with E-Ink technology and no longer a Regal E-Ink Pearl. This change has led to values ??of luminance and contrast as the best and highest refresh reduced. In addition, thanks to a more dense grid of 19%, the touchscreen is more responsive and accurate.

Into Amazon has also revised the perimeter lighting technology, which is now better, with a light distributed in a more uniform over the entire surface of the screen and a shade less blue. Finally, Amazon has also introduced the possibility of maximizing the intensity with a single touch and turn it off completely to save battery life. On the whole, therefore, the new Paperwhite is definitely better than the previous one, you now see if these adjustments were enough to bring the eReader competitive products. The new Amazon Kindle Paperwhite is available now at a price of 129 Euros for the WiFi only version and 189 € for one with 3G module. The latter is still in pre-order, with deliveries to start in November.

Paperwhite Amazon Kindle 2 vs Kobo Aura

Into Amazon Kindle Paperwhite 2 (2013) and Kobo Aura are currently the two best products in its class and it is therefore interesting to compare its main features. A constructive level the Kobo Aura is more compact and lightweight and is therefore more easily transportable. The display is a 6-inch like the Paperwhite 2 but has a slightly higher resolution (1024 x 768 pixels versus 1024 x 600 pixels), although it is still kind of E-Ink Pearl, and therefore does not adopt the latest technology E-Ink Paper and E-Ink Regal. The Paperwhite 2 thus providing enhanced luminance and contrast, even if this is more obvious on the home page than it is displaying a simple text. The theoretical advantage offered by E-Ink Regal regarding the refresh rate is less visible than you might think at first. Beyond this, however, the technology perimeter lighting is best in Kobo, despite the improvements of the Paperwhite 2.

the platform is higher than the Kobo Aura: If the processor works at 1 GHz as in the case of the Kindle, the eReader Japanese offers 1 GB of RAM instead of only 256 MB and twice the storage space, 4 GB instead of 2, on the other expandable via microSD. The user experience is roughly equivalent instead, the software of the two devices are the same (eg the book Beyond the Aura and X-rays of the Paperwhite 2, to gain access to extra content related to what you are reading). According to the tester the home page of the Kindle is better organized and more intuitive but in these cases we are always faced with a certain amount of subjectivity that does not allow to express a definite opinion.

Into a whole, therefore, it seems that Kobo is still in advantage over Amazon, providing a user experience similar but a device much thinner and lighter, with a screen similar and better lighting. The Kobo Aura is already available in all stores Mondadori, on the official website of the manufacturer and, as anticipated in this new, soon also in Feltrinelli bookshops, priced at 149 Euros.

Paperwhite Amazon Kindle 2 vs Sony PRS-T3

Into Sony has always been one of the most renowned in the industry of the eReader, a field in which he began to experiment a year before the Amazon itself. In recent years, however, the feeling is that the Japanese manufacturer is lagging behind with respect to the main competition, although with this new PRS-T3 has tried to bridge the gap. As you can see the size of the PRS-T3 are lower than those of the Kindle, despite the first intact also a whole series of physical controls (it is now the only device of this kind, among the main ones, to provide features of this type ).

Into The 6-inch display has the same resolution of Kobo Aura, then slightly greater than that of the new Kindle Paperwhite, but as in the case of the other player Japanese, also the PRS-T3 technology still uses the E-Ink Pearl to place of the newer E-Ink Charter Paperwhite 2. It ‘also important to remember also that, unlike the Kindle Paperwhite 2 and Kobo Aura, the Sony PRS-T3 offers no lighting system perimeter of the display, merely integrate a pair of LEDs in a media inserted in the semi-rigid housing, solution far from being comparable to those of the other two competitors for the quality of the result and flexibility of use.

Regarding the hardware, the situation is slightly in favor of Sony, which has a processor and a storage space equivalent to those of the new Kindle Paperwhite but has twice the RAM (512 MB versus 256) and the possibility of expand the storage space via microSD memory. Even the experience of using the Sony PRS-T3 has been improved, even if the software is not yet able to offer all the new functionality of the Amazon Kindle or the Kobo Paperwhite Aura. The feeling, therefore, is that, in general, although we are talking about three very good device, the Kobo Aura confirms once again the best eReader on the market today, while new Amazon Kindle and Sony PRS-Paperwhite T3 are placed respectively in the second and third place.
