Kindle Oasis: the Lotus Elise of eBook reader – Tom’s Hardware

PRO : The best technology available in the world today eBook Reader; small, stylish and ultra-light; fast and pleasant to use; the special housing with additional battery is included in the price.

v : Expensive and not available in discounted version with advertising; the six-inch screen may be too small. It lacks the automatic adjustment of the brightness sensor, present in the Kindle Voyage

VERDICT : Oasis Kindle eBook reader is the best in the world but it is expensive. It is the best choice for technology enthusiasts and reading who do not want compromise and are willing to pay the duty to have the latest technology

The new Amazon eBook reader is like a Lotus Elise. It is actually a small digital music player that concentrates the most advanced technologies, offers high performance and expensive. Technology enthusiasts have long known that, in our industry, small equals expensive. It is also the case of the new Kindle Oasis.

The first impact of this minute and winning player is from love at first sight . First note the cover of walnut-colored leather – available colors black and red – that looks aged and the center has given the Amazon logo. Then think about how small and compact. When you raise, you wonder for the low weight . Raising the cover of the device turns on automatically, as happens with some tablets and smartphones. The six-inch screen is surrounded by a frame reduced to a minimum , considering the current eBook readers standards.

Even the controls are minimal: a button to turn on and off which is seldom used, because just open and close the cover. And two configurable buttons to go to the next or previous page in the reading open book. Everything else is done using the touch screen. Finally there’s a Micro USB port that mounts on their Amazon Kindle since many do not even know what it was. Today I would have expected a USB C but actually for what we need to do (charging the device once a month or so, sometimes file transfer) is more than enough.

The weight is the most interesting part: The Oasis is a feather . Without housing weighs just over 130 grams. The case included, that many never rise up, instead get to 260 grams; that it is not just a few but the Kindle Oasis is still manageable.

The screen technology E Ink Paper is the same as already available for some time in the Kindle Voyage and recently in updating the Kindle Paperwhite. This is the latest evolution and is one of the best on the market, if not the best. The density of 300 PPI provides maximum sharpness and integrated light – to be adjusted manually – helps to read in any lighting condition. Simply put, with this ultra thin and lightweight player can read very well either under the blazing sun on the beach or in bed at night, before bed, without the need for artificial light.

The cover included is itself an evolution. In fact not only guards and protects the screen and most of the back of the player but is an additional battery that allows this small device autonomy almost double than the other Kindle. In my case I read quietly for a month, at least an hour a day before recharging it. The use of 3G or Wifi influence the autonomy; in my case I always keep the Oasis Kindle in “airplane mode” when I read.

We come to the sorrowful notes. Firstly the price, which starts from 289 € for the Wi-Fi only version and comes to EUR 349 for the WiFi + 3G. The first is the recommended purchase for all (those willing to spend that kind of money); second only to those who travel the world and claims to synchronize their reading and purchase them anywhere without connection fees. I bought a book by the beach in Valencia and I enjoyed the experience but still board the cheapest model .

There is a cheaper version “with special offers” – or by advertising in the screen saver – as in the case of the base or the Kindle Paperwhite. A show that Amazon wants to place this product in high-end and dedicate it to those who want the latest technology and not look for compromises.

As for the compatible formats, as always, the Kindle read virtually everything except ePub . It is a closed-door policy that we do not approve of Tom’s and we hope that sooner or later change even if the chances are low. Who wants to read text that is available only in unprotected ePub will as usual convert them to mobi with software like the free Calibre.

Despite the high price still missing colors . The rest of the screen technology is the same as Kindle Voyage and even today the new and updated Kindle Paperwhite. The evolution of this Kindle Oasis is in the size, weight and battery life record. Those who want a great eBook reader can easily save money by buying a new Paperwhite or, if like me you want at all costs to the physical buttons for screen change, a Voyage. Those who do not have financial problems or do not want to compromise and wants the best eBook reader on the market, must focus on the Kindle Oasis.
