Ebook 2015: more self-publishing, Kindle Unlimited and return to fundamentals – FIRSTonline

The 12 trend

Mark Coker is the founder of Smashwords, a platform of self-publishing and distribution of ebooks based in Los Gatos, a town south-west of San Francisco with 30 thousand inhabitants . In Los Gatos also based Netflix, the company that is leading the world toward the stream.

Smashwords is one of the most interesting of the new publishing, born from nothing around the Kindle. It is also one of the best observers to scrutinize the future of this new segment of the book industry. Every beginning of the year Mark Coker post on his blog, hosted by “The Huffington Post”, the forecast on the industry of the book in 2015, Mark tells us, will see a slowdown in growth with risks and opportunities for authors and all player this industry. The scenario, however, will not stay still and we will have some interesting developments. Here are the 12 forecasts Coker. Are only conjectures, but, in general, Coker c’azzecca precisely because it is in the right place and looks very much.

1. More and more authors choose self-publishing, thus strengthening the movement of independent authors.
2. The market share of ebook self-publishing will grow.
3. The screen readers will continue to increase, but with a lower growth rate than in the past.
4. 2015 will be a year of stagnant revenues for self-published authors and traditional ones.
5. Increase competition from traditional authors against those self-published as a result of a more aggressive pricing policy by traditional publishers.
6. The big publishers will intensify the use of free content.
7. The free lose its efficacy and its upward decrease in self-published authors.
8. Many independent authors abandon the field because of economic results inferior to their expectations.
9. Time management on the part of the authors will be a decisive event. The authors will have to focus on writing and put notice other activities that consume time.
10. The new rul es on the payment of VAT in Europe be amortized ebook sales in the old continent bringing less money in the pockets of the authors who will have to absorb the cost of VAT that everywhere is more than 3% in Luxembourg which is the VAT that up to December 31, 2014 it applied to ebook purchased on Amazon.
11. Unlimited use Amazon Kindle to pay less for the authors. Despite this curtailment independent authors will not abandon the program.
12. There will be a return to the fundamentals of writing: in 2015 the authors to be bestseller must follow precise rules comportamentoSoffermiamoci check on these last two points to deepen them again according to the vision of Mark Coker.

Kindle Unlimited (KU)

Whatever you think of Kindle Unlimited, is a fact that streaming is something that will bring a revolution in the book industry. Today many authors complain about a substantial decrease in revenues, while others are convinced that KU aid to extend the base of readers. KU will have a massive effect on the situation of 2015. Unlike competing services, such as Oyster and Schrib that allow authors and publishers to set the price and get a defined proportion for each ebook considered bed (Smashwords the reserve a share of 60% ), KU draws its resources from a common fund and pay the authors on the basis of the sale price, but compensates by number of readers in relation to the size of the fund determined by Amazon from month to month by virtue of the books eligible to be considered beds. It is a mechanism complicated to understand, because it is not transparent. It is as though Amazon said authors who have sold a book “In a few weeks I will decide what pagartelo”. < /P>

This would not be a problem if Amazon was a willing partner who makes a serious effort to pay publishers and authors with 70% of royalty as is usual. But it is not so. In November 2014 Amazon has paid just $ 1.39 for each ebook that has satisfied the requirements of reading regardless of the number of pages of the book or its price. $ 1.39 is a great margin if the book costs 99 cents (99 cents a book sold on Amazon pays a royalty of 34 cents). If, however, the price is $ 3.99 and the standard royalty of 70% is then equal to $ 2.80, then the halves KU 70-35 percent. Currently on KU royalties to authors and publishers are in fact 35%.

KU is the terminus for Amazon’s model agency division of royalty. As you recall the model agency was the crux of the dispute with Hachette, one of the more traditional publishers. The model requires the agency to Amazon to turn 70% of the sale price to publishers without being able to make discounts if unauthorized. The KDP platform of self-publishing is equivalent to the model agency with the difference that Amazon can discount the price to adjust it to the lowest on the market. KU with this model disappears because the core of its raison d’être, namely the price of the book, it becomes irrelevant in the calculation of the royalty. Amazon also takes the liberty to pay the authors less than 70% of royalty.

Putting KU on a fast track, Amazon discourages customers from buying single ebook. Because of KU there are 700 thousand titles, even the most voracious reader has a million reasons not to buy an ebook not at full price. For readers who look at the price, an ebook by $ 2.99 or $ 3.99 is expensive when you can read it (or read a similar one) for free by virtue of their monthly subscription. The catalog KU is almost entirely made up of titles of authors or independent publishers participating in the KDP Select program with the exclusivity clause. Without the support and the backing of independent authors, KU there sarebbe.Nel 2015 independent authors make a step back to say no to KU? Despite an entire legion of authors is unhappy with how things are going, I’m sure that the perpetrators will not abandon KU. Until now, many doubts about the dangers of exclusivity were put aside and independent authors have continued to join the program. Although 100 thousand autho rs decide to retire, Amazon would still have the critical mass to offer readers a wide choice to join KU and making sure that they do not buy more ebooks individual. It is a fact that many independent authors sell little and there is no doubt that some of them you will be enchanted by the siren’s KDP Select and decide who earn $ 1.39, or less, is better than nothing. This state of things will help make even more slippery slope on which gains are slipping all authors including traditional ones.

Back to basics

The formula for success is not as complicated as the one to send a mission to Mars. To build a bestseller you have to follow some simple but strict rules. For each rule performed well the author earns valuable points. Here are the ones that are for the Marl Coker tested rules of success in the world of the book industry.

1) The author must write a super-awesome and amazing book that leaves you breathless as the reader can to satisfy him emotionally. This rule applies to both the fiction that the other genres.
2) A book to be edited and redazionato in a professional manner, there must be no negligence in that they appear as such.
3) The book must have a magnificent cover image that he does find out from readers and make it desirable to their eyes.
4) The price must be corrected.
5) must publish in booking. The book is one of the most effective promotional tools for new books. The reservation allows you to market the title in advance giving visibility and avvantaggiandolo for launch day.
6) We must avoid the exclusive and distribute the title in the broadest possible way, offering it to all retailers.
7) Write another book, cool off and get back to work. Yes, it takes at least a shower. Take the time to do it well.
