Comparison – Kobo Aura H2O vs Kindle Voyage – Eeevolution (Registration) (Blog)

In recent months the sector eReader has expanded thanks to the marketing of several new models (a selection of the ones we liked best in our dedicated focus). Among the many were also issued two innovative eBook reader high end: the Kobo Aura H2O and the Kindle Voyage. These are devices with several differences: size, design, interface and also some policies at the base of the two companies. Aura H2O is bulkier and a little ‘less maneuverable, but has a larger screen, is water resistant and above is more open and versatile. Voyage instead is part of the ecosystem more closed than Amazon, but it is also lighter and more compact, as well as more immediate and intuitive. Both devices offer gre at reading experience digital, but they have different targets. We see in more detail how they differ in our comparison.

Design and ergonomics: handling VS impermeability

Speaking of lines and especially footprint are the two eReader very different. The design of the Aura H2O in the front is more classic, while the Voyage because of opaque glass from processing and display flush looks more modern and pleasant . At the rear of both devices have a surface from three-dimensional shape and angular that helps a lot handling. Of course the Kindle with its weight and its smaller size is more comfortable and easy to handle the Kobo which, because of its larger display, has considerably larger. However thanks to the aforementioned body with a particular shape, the rubberized plastic that increases the grip of the frames and the right size, the newcomer in the house Kobo is more comfortable than you would expect. In any case during long reading sessions around the 50 grams of difference are felt: Voyage is more practical and less tired arms and wrists.

Kobo Aura H2O vs Kindle Voyage

This is due to the excellent idea of implementing the soft-touch keys at the sides of the screen that allow pleasant experience of use, proving the excellent substitutes for the physical buttons so loved by many readers (including myself) – but less and less integrated eReader. The Aura H2O instead has no physical buttons for navigation, which I regret because in my opinion on a terminal of this size would have made a big difference. On the other hand, as the name implies, the new Kobo has a very interesting peculiarity: the impermeability. Aura H2O as it features IP67 certification , which guarantees its resistance to immersion in one meter deep up to thirty minutes with no damage, as well as the total resistance to dust. This means that you can finally bring the device in the pool, the beach, or, from personal experience, in the bathtub, and read quietly without fear of splashing water or sand grains.

Taking into hand devices communicate both a good sense of strength and solidity , although the body of magnesium and glass anti-scratching Kindle give a feeling more premium than polycarbonate rubberized adopted by Kobo, but is slightly better as friction and grip.

Display and front-lighting: two great panels

Let’s move to what is the heart of the experience of reading in an eReader: the display . Both devices feature an E-Ink Paper of excellent quality. Onboard Aura H2O we find a panel from 6.8 inches , the broadest canon 6 inches implemented on Voyage, which, however, thanks to the reduced diagonal, manages to have a higher density: 300 PPI compared with about 265 Kobo. In practical terms, however, the differences are minimal. Both players have an outstanding performance, the greater definition of the Kindle you notice slightly more when you go to view images, but it’s really a tiny difference. As for the contrast with the lighting system is better off in Kobo, and if you enable the Kindle is to win the challenge.

The system front-lighting is excellent in both terminals: the light is distributed very uniformly and allows soddisfaccene reading in the dark or in poor lighting conditions ostiche. The Kindle still achieves a more brilliance and has a yield slightly higher, while the Kobo has a diagonal of almost an inch wider, which is felt mainly by displaying rich content of images. The difference more clear in my opinion is formed by the ambient light sensor : on the Kindle and unfortunately absent on Aura H2O. This apparatus allows the Voyage to adapt automatically the front-lighting to the lighting conditions where you are: in this way you always have a nice gloss, excellent performance and a well-balanced energy expenditure.

Interface, and store formats supported

In this area begin to emerge the first major differences between Kobo and Kindle. The terminal Amazon in fact is part of a ecosystem closed but multiple simple and intuitive and Kobo is more open and reads a greater number of formats, but that its greater versatility you pay with an interface more complicated and less comfortable . If you already own tablets and smartphones, and you have no trouble juggling the various items of the operating systems of the past, then you will not find great difficulty in using the Kobo. In case you were not particularly accustomed instead to new technologies or however you were looking for a device much more straightforward and easy to understand would be better to opt for the Kindle.

Kobo Aura H2O vs Kindle Voyage

This is because the system board Voyage is simpler: the focus the experience of use is concentrated in the top bar, which allows you to go home, to see the store, to go back, to search, to control the brightness and to open the settings menu. The elements in the OS instead of Kobo are located in different areas and less intuitive. The look of the home, the library and the store, in my opinion, is more attractive Aura H2O , which uses a nice display for boxes, but if I have to choose I prefer the immediacy of the Kindle . Same goes for the virtual store, much more immediate in the Voyage that last arrived home Aura.

It should also be borne in mind that Amazon store is the most complete and rich currently available in our country. Kobo is making good progress and has an interesting catalog, but is not yet able to compete with the company’s Bezos from this point of view. Aura H2O but supports multiple formats , including TXT, HTML, XHTML, PDF, MOBI, RTF and EPUB, which is one of the most widely used by most digital stores and libraries that provide the eBook. The Kindle instead natively reads only AZW (proprietary format), TXT, PDF, unprotected MOBI and PRC, while HTML and DOC can be read but only after a conversion with the service documents. What does all this mean? That if you want an eReader easy and immediate and that allows you to purchase from Amazon in a rapid then the Voyage for you, but if you are more experienced users, and you think you need a more versatile then it would be best to consider Aura H2O.

Kobo Aura H2O vs Kindle Voyage

Storage: Cloud VS microSD

Another issue in which the two companies will adopt a very different philosophy is that of the storage . Both devices have 4 GB of internal memory, but Kobo allows expand that memory via microSD, while Amazon no. The US company, however, offers unlimited storage space on your cloud . This means that when you buy a book or a comic book store on Amazon it is automatically loaded into the library of our account and remains stored on the servers of the company, from which we can go to download it when it is most convenient. This service comes at a crucial against: to access the cloud must be connected to the Internet, which is not always possible unless you buy the version of Voyage with 3G, which, however, has a price far higher: starts at $ 269. It should however be specified that in approximately 3 GB, the space that more or less both readers leave available to the user in the internal memory, can be loaded already several hundred books. Eye but comics and PDF rich in images, because they are among the types of large files.

bo Aura H2O vs Kindle Voyage

Interface reading: completeness against simplicity

Even in the interface of reading and in the menu on the text files , you notice some of the differences in approach already mentioned before: Kindle is more simple and straightforward, while Kobo is often more complete and versatile, but less intuitive. While reading the text file by pressing in the center of the page in Kobo, or in the upper one in the Kindle, you access the context menu. What’s Voyage is nothing but the usual navigation bar already in the home and enriched here by a second line containing four additional options: text formatting, navigation, sharing on social and icon to set a bookmark, and a bar Navigation in the lower zone. Aura H2O instead we have the notification bar at the top that allows us to access the various controls of brightness and general settings, and everything about the settings of reading and navigation is moved down. At the bottom of the screen are icons for formatting fact, statistics reading, navigation and v arious other items enclosed in a small icon on the right.

As mentioned a few lines above the whole is less immediate but often more complete: just look at the menu text formatting to realize that the possible combinations offered by Kobo are much more than those made available by Kindle. As for the interaction with the text both players have the same opportunities: holding down a word or a portion of the text you can highlight, add notes, search the dictionary or on Wikipedia or share via their accounts on social network most famous, such as Facebook and Twitter.

Comics & PDF: some disappointment

The reading of PDF in my opinion not great on any of the two devices, meaning they both have the Pecce which I found annoying. Kobo, which thanks to the display from the diagonal wider allows you to view the contents better, unfortunately is slower and less responsive in PDF handling, especially when it comes to the large file. Kinle instead is faster navigation, but does not keep zoom settings when changing page, which however does Aura H2O.

Moving on to comics , then there are several factors to consider. The first are the supported file: the Kobo allows you to import and open archives CBR and CBZ, which are among the most popular of the category, and also manages them well enough. Reading is fairly smooth and the fact store here zoom settings, combined with the diagonal of 6.8 inches, from good satisfaction. The Voyage rather not read these formats, but has an advantage: the reading system for cartoons . Many comics that you can buy on Amazon are indeed prepared for this mode of reading, which allows all’eReader automatically zoom on various cartoons, passing from one to another with a simple tap on the screen or with the soft-touch buttons as you do for books. With this greatly enhances the reading experience and 6 inches not become a problem.

Autonomy: many hours on a single charge

On paper, the should Kobo have longer battery : according to data reported by companies on a single charge, with an average of thirty minutes of reading a day with WiFi off and lighting system at an intermediate level, Aura H2O should allow to read about two months, while Yoyage about six weeks. In practice, however, I have not encountered this difference and I think it’s due to ambient light sensor and my carelessness. Often moving from an environment where I need a brightness level up to read well, to one with a better light conditions, with Aura H2O I forget to turn down the brightness and end up wasting energy unnecessarily. With the Kindle however this does not happen, because I just set the brightness to Automatic, and leave you to think about all the software, gaining in terms of energy.

Kobo Aura H2O vs Kindle Voyage

Our conclusions

To sum up, the choice is really hard: one hand we have the Kobo Aura H2O, versatile , with a diagonal and resistant to water and dust, the other the Kindle Voyage, more compact, convenient and aesthetically appealing . Both devices have a very good screen and a lighting system well done. Voyage however it has an operating system far more immediate and easy to use even for those who are beginners, and especially the store and the Amazon ecosystem, which are currently the most complete and functional category. Conversely Kobo is more suitable for those seeking a terminal versatile, open and feature-rich but not always intuitive. Find Kobo Aura H2O to 179 € for sale on Amazon, but also on Inmondadori. Kindle Voyage instead has not arrived yet officially in Italy, wanting to be found on Amazon US to $ 199. Unless, however, be prepared to spend a lot for shipping and wait for a very long time, our advice and wait for the arrival on our national store.

Kindle Scout: now the books they choose players – Future Daily

So far, it has always been the publisher to choose between stacks of manuscripts such as publishing, which to discard, which deserve attention and which do not even deign to look. It has always been the distinguished by between readers and writers, the figure regulator, the one who decides what is worth to get in the eyes of the world. But if in the future no longer so?

The role of the reader

The readers have taken today immense power. Internet and social media have allowed access to information before impossible that quickly changed the rules of the market. You can choose products to buy from an increasingly extended, you can comment, recommend or criticize, it holds the possibility to influence their success or their failure. The revolution of the web is this: you have connected all between them, creating a network of exchanges potentially infinite. And the reader is no longer suffering passively what is put under the nose, now has a face, but above all has a voice, and should be listened to, wooed, won, convinced. Scout with Kindle, the new service from Amazon, but his role becomes even more central.

 Kindle Scout 1

Kindle Scout

For authors get noticed becomes increasingly difficult, and the new service from Amazon is an attempt more to emerge and break away from the huge amount of publications that crowd the market and growing dramatically from day to day .
Kindle Scout has in fact the purpose of selecting the authors deemed worthy, and offer them a publishing deal. And up here all quite normal. The news is that there is no editor to choose, are the readers themselves to do so.

How it works

The authors can send a text to respect some simple rules: must belong to the genera romance, yellow, thriller, science fiction and fantasy, be at least 50 000 words, in Word format, must have a cover, and photos of the autobiography, information that Kindle Scout will send to all readers participants.
Amazon will carry only a preselection, to filter at least some texts that have the qualifications to participate in the initiative. As soon will be accepted, the novel will be inserted into the platform and will have 30 days to convince readers and collect many votes as possible. Top Rated are read and finally selected by Amazon making one last final skimming. What earns the colossus of Bezos texts are potentially winning, because the idea is just to invest in novels that have already had some feedback and a circle of potential readers willing to buy them once released. In fact, Amazon does not want to just give the power in the hands of readers but devote himself to publications that eliminate the risks, and in this manner it is safe to do so.

kindle scout What you will find Kindle Scout

Kindle Scout offers a publication in eBook with 5-year contract through the Kindle Press Imprint, for some titles also audiobooks, an advance of $ 1.500, which also aims to discourage possible “betrayals” with rivals, royalties of 50%, and the powerful marketing services to Amazon for promotion. The author will also maintain the rights of the press and connected. And if you do not win no matter, it is still a useful experience because the initiative allows the novel to have a showcase of honor for 30 days.

The reader offers instead many samples of stories to read for free , can indeed “appoint” up to three books at a time of proposals published every day, in order to more campaign will also get a first free copy of all eBooks which appointed and that have been published and, as already mentioned, a great power decision.
Readers become the real drivers of the fate of an author, they hold their future editorial.

The first results

Amazon has so far selected thirteen books Kindle Scout for publication under its Kindle Press Imprint, and November 26 announced the first titles. All selected authors had already written and published other books, before presenting their latest work in Kindle Scout, and most have gone for the traditional press, at least once. Of those thirteen books, ten of them have in fact published at least one book with a traditional publisher. Most were released by small publishers, but at least three have been published by major American publishers, including Random House and Gale.
Amazon has not yet announced the publishing program, but the first books to come out certainly ‘ early next year.

Editors

Ironically give into the hands of readers the power may be the salvation of publishers who would be in his hands texts for publication already tested and appreciated. As for Amazon, this would limit the risks of failure, and would make it easier to find the coveted new best seller on duty.
If they did a step in the direction taken by Amazon could also earn them and perhaps establish a relationship with the reader yet deeper and involved.

 readers

The future of Kindle Scout

This is only the first round for Kindle Scout, and for now Amazon goes there with feet of lead, do not take too many risks, public fact the winners in eBook format, thus avoiding possible losses.
No word yet on where this service will lead to accurate, if it will change again the rules of ‘Publishing, overturning of all or part of the roles until now consolidated, or if it will fail. What is certain is that for the umpteenth time Amazon is a step ahead of others. Hardly miss a beat, as demonstrated by the fact that many successful authors also were and still are willing to experiment with this new service.

Kindle ebook reader in 2014, evidence interactive

What Amazon is one of the best reader in the market , especially considering the price, lower than the previous model, although the technical specifications are all improved. And finally there is the touchscreen

12/19/2014

The ebook reader is a declaration of love for words. An absolute love, monogamous and faithful like no technology today is capable of doing. Not a tablet, which allows detours and digressions on the web (and also grants to those who use it), not a computer, which is designed for other purposes, and the reading of novels and essays adapts unwillingly.

The Walkman, the iPod, the radio or Tivoli Geneva: there are few examples like this, in a world where you do not sell the excellence but the ability to do it all (which often remains a mere possibility ). Or the Kindle, born seven years ago and now almost synonymous with digital readout, although other brands have appeared over time, while some have withdrawn from the market.

For the Amazon ebook reader was the first step towards a slow but radical transformation, which is to sell not only objects, but services. The strategy of Jeff Bezos is simple: to produce quality hardware affordable (in balance or even below cost) and gain from the content. Books, but also music, apps, videos, movies, streaming via subscription or purchase and download. In Italy, for example, has just left the Unlimited service, which allows you to read unlimited texts paying a monthly fee of ten euro. Sure, there are almost all large publishers, but for those there is always the option of buying individual stocks, both in print and digital.

The reader Amazon is one of the best ebook reader on the market, especially considering the price, which is lower than the previous model, only 59 euro. But the technical specifications are all improved: 4GB of memory instead of two, to keep on file thousands of books, a display sharper (167 points, not a record but the improvement is noted), and finally the touchscreen. Still missing the backlight, but in this price range even competitors did not adopt. The new base model will not win any design awards: is boxy, anonymous, has a logo on the back too much in evidence (no more Kindle, but Amazon), but for those who can spend more money there is the Paperwhite or the new model Voyage magnesium (for now only in the US starting at $ 199).

All Kindle ebook readers can access the Amazon store Italian or foreign, with millions of books available, have unlimited space storage on the cloud and have a battery that lasts up to 4 weeks. In addition, those of last generation and also have some new features, like FreeTime that offers parents a way to encourage children to read more, turning reading into a game show. There is also Word Wise, an English very advanced, which is activated by simply touching the desired word. As always, then, you can change the size and type of font, select pieces of text and share them on social networks, use the built-in dictionary Italian or connect to Wikipedia and keep everything in sync on and on Kindle app for smartphones, tablets and computers .

Kindle Scout: a good start, but where is the innovation? – Gamobu

Kindle Scout is a program launched by Amazon, designed to allow readers to actively choose which authors deserve to be published. A few weeks ago we told of the strengths and weaknesses of this system, and now we are finally able to make a judgment on the first names of authors selected for publication.

On Kindle Scout vote stories that pi & # xF9; like, and staff Amazon chooses which publish

On Kindle Scout will vote the stories most like, and staff Amazon chooses which publish

WHERE ARE THE BEGINNERS?

Considering the titles announced by November 26 to today, currently selected books to be published under the name of Kindle Press are 13 (you can find them here). Dispelling a myth right away: the authors chosen are not rookies . There are rookies luxury, young artists of the keyboard, or writers in his spare time.

All the selected authors have already written books in the past, and most of them followed the canonical process through paper versions.

10 authors of 13 have already been published by traditional publishing houses many of which are small, but most notably also Random House and Gale.

This is not to say that Amazon is absolutely wrong to do what he does, not at all. It seems appropriate, however, to emphasize that the first batch of authors Kindle Scout is far from being a gamble: we talk about writers with experience , have navigated, to which Amazon is offered as a new publisher in all respects .

In exchange for a small advance and some royalty, Amazon will release these titles in e-book version and – in some cases – even audiobook. Authors will remain, along with other rights, including those for physical copies.

The Game Master, William Bernhardt

The Game Master, William Bernhardt

will read WHEN I FIRST BOOKS KINDLE SCOUT?

Unfortunately, we do not know when we will be able to read these first titles Kindle Scout. Meanwhile, we know that these books are in the works , and then it takes the traditional timing techniques to fix the product and prepare it for the public.

‘, however, likely that we will not have to wait much, probably only the ‘beginning of 2015 . In support of this hypothesis, in recent days Bernhardy William, author of The Game Master , said that the book should be available within a month.

Just the authors seem to be very satisfied of this new program. And why should not they? Kindle Scout was launched a few weeks ago, and in a month may already out the first titles ! In a normal publisher instead, when a title is chosen when it is published can spend up to a year, sometimes more.

If Kindle Scout will a house of cards or not , we’ll find out just a few months.

We try to write on Kindle WriteOn Amazon – Wired.it

As mentioned earlier, the attentions of Amazon, at this time, concern the writing community . Finished (for now) the battle against the publishing group Hachette on lowering the price of ebooks, ecommerce giant, to maintain its hegemony editorial, aims to create a social environment based on writing, on the model of Wattpad. That is a platform where users can post their stories – it is stories or novels – receiving feedback and comments. The success of the Canadian Wattpad community has been slow but steady, since its inception, in 2006, but only recently has begun to talk about it, about the visibility that some users have gotten posting their work on this platform (as Anna Todd After ) and an app that makes it accessible literature works mobile and generates traffic that covers 85% of the total.

    The home page of Wattpad

It should be called one thing: Wattpad is a social network for writers who owes much of his fortune to fanfiction, or stories that have starring celebrities or characters of narrative universes (they belong in novels or TV series) already exist and, often, bound by copyright. This kind of works, written by young, often not a model of literary virtuosity, do not offer the reader a product of superior regarding editing. But they are still a territory to explore for readers looking for interesting stories, current, and maybe for publishers who want to pick up the latest trends in search of some author to add to its stable.

As mentioned, Amazon responded with a new platform like Wattpad called Kindle WriteOn . A kind of social network for authors, for now in beta and only available in English. Membership is by invitation. I had the opportunity to try WriteOn: following my impressions.
WriteOn looks like a social network for authors simply and intuitively. It offers the same tool Wattpad, often replicated in a more powerful. For example comments: on Wattpad can be long 2 thousand jokes about WriteOn 10 thousand. The home page is quite clear, certainly less chaotic Wattpad, with stories listed by genre or feedback. The genera listed wink to younger users, including fantasy, sci / fi horror we find spirtual , fanfiction , teen fiction and romance . That kind of literature at the turn of the paranormal and the sick lit, so fashionable these days, that mixes fantastic and sentimental.

The creation of a cover inherits the same system Kindle Direct Publishing, less intuitive and slower Wattpad (where you just upload an image from your PC), but with the advantage of presenting various models opzionabili different frame and font for the title and the author’s name. Interesting the chance to read the work in the format “page” or scrollbars. The forum is now populated with topics regarding technical aspects of the platform.

In conclusion, at least on a computer, Kindle WriteOn, in terms of technology, it has nothing to envy to Wattpad. There are some unknowns, however, that make uncertain the success and the eventual passing of the Canadian competitors. The first, obvious consideration is that Wattpad has existed for several years and has managed over time to consolidate a strong community.
Second consideration: the success of the Canadian community is based on a functional app that has begun to think about when the Kindle and the iPhone were not yet on the market; Today this same app was able to polarize the audience of the least well-off as it is also usable on smartphones that are based on Java technology.

If Google + failed to match Facebook, will succeed Amazon Wattpad to gobble up and become the first writing community on the planet?
The answer is not so obvious.
