If you look at the proliferation of services for reading subscription , it seems that the mantra of the digital reading of 2015 is “all-you-can-read”. In a few, however, can match the weight of Amazon and its Kindle Unlimited, the platform subscription for unlimited reading which has a catalog of 15,000 titles in Italian and of more than 700,000 volumes in other languages.
In what constitutes a service of reading for subscription , is obvious: by registering, users pay a monthly fee and, in return, they can read all you want. If for readers the idea seems intriguing, Amazon has been heavily criticized by authors and publishers for the mismatch between direct books downloaded and fees paid.
The senior vice president of Kindle, Russ Grandinetti, said to ‘Digital Book World event in New York that Amazon is working to address the concerns of the authors o n the possibility that the subscription program adversely affect their earnings, explaining that the service is young, and asking to wait until we have reached a trim at least stable. The subscription model ebook global, then, Grandinetti said that in every category of digital media subscriptions are having success and do not see why books should be an exception.
But the real obstacle to the diffusion of the service, at least in the US, is that the platform Unlimited Amazon does not have the support of the major US publishers, publishers, however, have argued Scribd , Oyster and entitle , start-up companies that pay publishers based on the pages of their books read by users and which offer a structure of fees fixed amounts.
Given the turbulent past, the major US publishers are reluctant to invest in ‘ecosystem Amazon and prefer to seek alternative ways to raise revenue arising from their digital collect ions. The Macmillan CEO John Sargent, for example, has recently expressed in terms determined by declaring that 64% of all the sales eBook is led by Amazon, and that this “has to change.” Precisely this has prompted the company to enter into agreements with Scribd and Oyster to explore the possibility of adding to their subscription services e-books of works no longer print or out of print.
Still, the best-selling author HMWard withdrew all his works from Kindle Unlimited and called for a rethinking of the pay scheme after seeing their revenues fall by 75% in just over two months, although he had received a cash prize as “Kindle Select All Stars “on both occasions.
Testimonials like these certainly do not encourage industry self-publishing and damage the image of the Amazon. Despite all this, the colossus eCommerce Seattle continues to invest in the Unlimited program and to believe in its success, conv inced, as mentioned earlier, that the global media industry is gravitating towards services subscription and that the ebook industry is destined to follow the same road.
