Amazon Kindle 3G Oasis – SmartWorld

Joseph Tripodi

Review Amazon Kindle Oasis – In a few weeks it became the dream forbidden to anyone reading digitally, it has an innovative design and incredible autonomy, but a very high price. All seek it, everyone wants it, and we also wanted to try the new Amazon Kindle Oasis to find out if it is worth the money it costs, and if there really is a reason to prefer it to the consolidated Paperwhite.

Construction and ergonomics

No, we turn around too: the Kindle Oasis is simply the best ebook reader in terms design, attention to detail and weight. For the first time we are faced with a player with a form factor different than usual: This Oasis is almost square, with little frame around the display and two fantastic physical keys the advancement of the pages of which we immediately fell in love.

Kindle Oasis has a asymmetrical design , with one side more convex that allows us to hold the device easily with one hand; Moreover, being equipped with accelerometer automatically rotates the interface if impugniamo with his left hand, making it undoubtedly the ebook reader more comfortable for left-handers.

In the thinner area, Kindle Oasis it is often only 3.4 mm , while in the grip climb to 8.5 mm. Moreover, without housing, this player is incredibly light : weighs only 133 grams and when you lift the first time you can not believe that weight really so little.

But Kindle Oasis is sold bundled with a leather case ( available in the colors Black, Walnut and Bordeaux), which not only protects the screen but greatly increases the range of device. This covers, in fact, includes an extra battery, which literally guarantees months of battery life. The case snaps magnetically to the Kindle and battery thickness is slightly greater than that of the handle.

Even the other end of the cover is magnetic: attaches to the Kindle Oasis is on the front (keeping it closed when not in use) and at the back, so they do not dangle annoyingly when we read. With the cover attached, the Oasis Kindle can weigh 240 g , slightly more than the average of the competition

If it is not yet clear, I repeat once again: the design of the Kindle Oasis is undoubtedly the best you could ever hope to find in an ebook reader; the half point that separates it from the maximum is due to ‘ absence of waterproofing , a gem in more than we would have liked, considering the cost.

Reading Experience

The Amazon ebook readers have always done in imitating school paper books and this Kindle of course Oasis no exception, bringing the ‘ reading experience at the highest level .

the touch screen, of course flush with the frames, is the “usual” 6 “with density of 300 PPI , but overall the experience is even better thanks to more homogeneous illumination. To illuminate the Kindle Oasis, in fact, we think well 10 LED (against 6 of Voyage and 4 Paperwhite), which makes the display clearly visible even in complete darkness. As always, the light is neutral and is whitish / yellowish, not to tire the eyes for night reading.

In addition, we finally the return of physical keys , which They are once again the most convenient way to browse the page. Curiously, the down button (which is the most easily accessible with your thumb) default goes back a page, but fortunately you can reverse the option of the settings.

Hardware and software

As always, talk about the processor or RAM of these devices does not make sense: the Kindle are only for read , and if you hope to get us anything else (including reading comic books or surfing the web), orient yourself on another. Aboard the Kindle Oasis are the usual internal memory of 4 GB , which contains thousands of books and perhaps the chance to fill in a short time.

The software, however, is the usually we’re used to: virtually identical to the Paperwhite and Voyage, integrates all the functions of which we fell in love with time, including research of the words in the dictionary and Wikipedia and translation of terms.

as always, the Amazon Kindle only supports books in mobi format (in addition to TXT, PDF and HTML): no comic (CBR, CBZ …) or ePub, but if you have already purchased from other texts store you can always convert them with the infallible Calibre.

in short, the firmware does not offer anything new than Paperwhite and Voyage, and the only really adding noteworthy from the point of hardware views are, of course, the physical buttons with which to advance in reading.

Finally, almost unexplained absence of light sensor that had been implemented in the Voyage: a cost like that we would have expected to find auto brightness, considering that Amazon has never built a physical button to activate / deactivate the over lighting.

Price

Oasis Review Amazon Kindle 3G - 14

Although we have repeatedly stressed how much we liked the Kindle Oasis, is really hard to find a justification for such a high price : aside from the physical buttons and autonomy, this player does not offer practically nothing more than the Paperwhite, which is often granted to 100 €, ie almost a third of the price of basic version of Voyage (€ 289.99).

once again, then, despite the convenience of having a always-on 3G connection that we should not pay that you can see Wikipedia or download new books, you can probably spare you the nearly € 60 more to buy the version with integrated access, priced at € 349.99.
