I’m afraid to take my beautiful (and expensive) Kindle Oasis on the beach – International Business Times Italia

Yesterday I went to sea. I’m not a big lover of the beach, the hot sun and the crowd, so I love to meet with various technological devices. Up to now I have brought with me the trusty Kindle Paperwhite to read, but lately, driven by the beautiful design, I switched to a brand Kindle Oasis staining bordeaux.

Beautiful and expensive: is the top of the range home Amazon and it costs 289 euros, practically it is the ebook reader most expensive on the market, even compared to the top range of the competition as Kobo, which recently presented the Aura One, but there are really dozens of solutions alternatives. I have decided to focus again on a device to Amazon for the ease of use, the endless catalogue (especially in English) and in general for the impeccable service.

But what is the best Kindle Oasis to justify the 100 euro more than a Kindle Voyage that is also very good? First of all, Oasis has already its case magnetic leather, which hides an extra battery that really makes the difference, while for the Voyage you have to spend another 45 euro for the funzionalissima case Origami, which has the fact of being able to hold the device to “walk”through houses.

Oasis, however, boasts of a unique design, it is usable also by mancini thanks to the gyroscope inside, in addition to having two physical buttons, in addition to the usual touch, the turning of the pages. The handle is ergonomic and slim, and moves the center of gravity in the palm, so that the device rests on your hand as would the spine of a book. It is lighter, is smaller, it almost seems that “disappear” in the hands of the player: it only weighs 131 grams without a case, and often is 3.4 mm in its thinnest part. Ok, everything is beautiful, but I the books, as I think in many, I read them on the beach. And I’m afraid to bring this jewel in the jungle of the marina.

This is because Kindle Oasis is not water-resistant, and this is a serious lack for an object that is so expensive. It does not resist the contact of water and dust (let alone sand), and not because this technology has not yet been applied to the ebook reader: the Kobo Aura One can be submerged up to two metres for 60 minutes, in addition to also having a larger screen. But that is not the end: the Kindle Oasis does not have the sensor for the adaptive brightness (in other words, we can only choose manually the screen must be lit): of course, requires more LEDS than the Voyage and the lighting is really good, but really no one has figured out why Amazon has waived the right to this feature is already present on a device lower-end.

The device is top of the range for reading the book. Yes, the one that has existed for hundreds of years: is mobile, do not download, it is resistant to dust, sand, and certainly not destroyed immediately if it comes in contact with a little water. And Amazon wants to reach this result with the line Kindle, adding of course the possibility of being able to carry hundreds of books without filling a suitcase. The ultimate objective would be to make the Kindle the more portable and accessible to anyone. Amazon has approached a lot with the Kindle Oasis, but has not reached perfection because of some shortcomings, given that the price could be plugged (and we have not spoken even of the absence of the headphone jack, and support to the audiobooks). The end user of Oasis, then pays a substantially new design, more than the technology, which basically has not advanced an inch with this device.
